Closing the corona gender gap: practical steps to raising boys' achievement (in partnership with Dragonfly Training)
- What can be done to adress the general widening of achievement gaps caused by the pandemic?
- Which classroom strategies are most effective specifically for disadvantaged boys?
- How do we support mental health within the context of subject learning?
According to the DfE, the coronavirus outbreak may cause the attainment gap for disadvantaged children to widen by as much as 75%. Also, the Mental Health Foundation warns that schools are likely to face a spike in demand for support from “hidden children” who have become vulnerable as a result of the crisis. There is no doubt that within this mushrooming vulnerable group, those worst affected will be boys whose underperformance compared to girls was already a factor prior to the pandemic.
This unique course distils years of experienced best-practice from hundreds of teachers during an original Strategic School Improvement Funding project to close gender gaps in maths. The £450K SSIF project is firmly founded on the research evidence found in the DfE-promoted Sutton Trust-EEF Toolkit and has surpassed expectations in terms of measurable outcomes. This fully re-engineered online version will be presented by the lead training designer and has been expanded to cover all subjects and key stages. All strategies may be deployed at the teacher’s discretion at relevant points in the lesson stream and may last as little as one minute. There is no need to remove children for interventions, nor to change materials or lesson plans.
