NACE: How can adaptive teaching provide cognitive challenge in a mixed ability classroom?

12 November 2024 9am – 12pm Subject Online

On this course colleagues will be able to reflect upon the latest research on adaptive teaching and how it applies to their daily teaching. The session will give practical ways in which teaching can be adaptive to the needs of a mixed ability classroom. A ‘Teaching to the Top’ approach will be emphasised with a focus on the types of tasks that encourage students to think hard in their learning and not merely complete tasks, based upon the idea of Professor Rob Coe that 'learning happens when people think hard'. The organisation of learning with the mixed ability classroom will also be explored with practical ideas including how to adapt teaching for higher attainers. Teachers will go away having reflected upon their own teaching as well as with models for the type of activities that challenge all learners and practical organisational strategies that will help them further adapt their teaching in a mixed ability class.
