IAPS Debating Competition 2026

We have launched a new District and National debating competition. All Districts are encouraged to organise debating contests, with the winning teams advancing to a national final. Initially open to Year 7/8 pupils.

While Districts will lead on regional events, IAPS will provide full guidance and practical help, with Rob Taylor offering his support to schools and Districts.

This initiative aims to enrich pupils' experiences and develop key skills like oracy, critical thinking and teamwork.

Competition information

Each participating school enters one team of two speakers. Teams compete within their local District event and the winners of the Cup Final will receive a trophy and be invited to the National Finals.

Please read the following information before booking onto a District event:

Entry fee

A fee of £15 per team will be charged to contribute towards the costs incurred by host schools in delivering the events.

Competition timeline
  • Autumn term – Confirm host schools by October half term; entries open in November

  • Spring term – District competitions to take place

  • Summer term – National Finals (date and location TBC)

Hosting an IAPS debating event

How to host your District's debating competition

If you are hosting your District’s debating competition, below is some key information to help you run the event.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive guide. It outlines the requirements you will need to consider in order to deliver a debating competition in line with the IAPS format. This ensures that all schools across our Districts follow a standardised compeittion format.

Interested in hosting your District's debating?

If your school is interested in hosting your District’s debating competition, please begin by discussing the opportunity within your District and agreeing together which school will take on the host role. Once a decision has been made, simply let IAPS know.

Full guidance and support will be provided by IAPS and Rob Taylor, the driving force behind the success of the Scottish competition.
