A passionate team of Green Leaders at IAPS member school Reigate St Mary’s Prep and Choir School recently wrote to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ask why the government is not investing more in renewable energy sources.

Concerned about the effects fossil fuels are having on the planet and wanting to protect future generations from the catastrophic effects of these, the school's six Green Leaders put pen to paper to ask the government to think carefully.

The Green Leaders carefully detailed what RSM is doing to play its part to protect against climate change, including recycling water using water butts, being careful about paper usage, recycling old pens, walking to school and discouraging the idling of car engines in the area.

They challenged Mr Sunak on why the government is still investing in fossil fuel exploration whilst banning onshore wind farms and solar farms, also gathering signatures from over 300 other pupils at RSM who feel the same way.

To their delight, the Green Leaders received a reply from 10 Downing Street thanking them for their thoughts on this important matter and explaining it had been forwarded to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy so they were aware of the view.

Headmaster Marcus Culverwell, who leads on Education for Social Responsibility nationally for IAPS, said: "I am extremely proud of our Green Leaders and all of the children at RSM as they have used their citizen voice, and their understanding of important environmental issues, to communicate with those who can effect change.

"This is exactly what we want for children coming up through our school – that they become young people who are knowledgeable about significant issues and determined to make a positive difference in the world."
