English: Providing the Best Start for All Learners

19 May 2026 9am – 12pm Subject Online

Our commitment to providing the very best start for every learner underpins this rich and inspiring professional development offer for English practitioners across all phases of Prep Schools.

We are delighted to welcome Helen Battelley, who will lead an in‑depth session exploring the development of early writers. Drawing on expertise from across the EYFS, she will examine what strong early writing looks like, how to nurture emerging writers, and how to ensure a seamless progression into Key Stage 1. This session will equip practitioners with practical strategies, developmentally appropriate approaches, and a clear understanding of how early foundations can support confident, motivated writers in the years ahead.

Building on this, our next session turns to challenge in writing at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. Participants will explore how to stretch and inspire pupils through carefully designed tasks, high‑quality texts, and purposeful writing opportunities that deepen thinking and raise standards. This session offers guidance on how challenge can be inclusive, engaging, and responsive to a wide range of learners.

Finally, Marc Knight, our English Subject Adviser, will lead a session on “Adding Value to Your English Department.” This practical and energising contribution will focus on creating a vibrant English culture through exciting opportunities for both staff and pupils. From developing departmental expertise to building engaging experiences that ignite a love of language and literature, Marc will share strategies that strengthen curriculum offer, enrich enrichment, and enhance the overall impact of your English team.

Together, these sessions provide a coherent, research‑informed pathway that supports schools in delivering exceptional writing experiences from EYFS through to KS3 - ensuring every learner is equipped, inspired and ready to thrive.
