When does it take place?
The Chess Championships take place at the end of Spring term at the start of the Easter holidays.
Booking open
For events in the Autumn term, bookings will open during the Summer term preceding it.
For events in the Spring term, bookings will open during the Autumn term.
For events in the Summer term, bookings will open during the Spring term.
Championship
The Championship tournament is best suited to experienced players.
This tournament will be played over seven rounds across two days.
The time control will be 45 minutes per player.
Games in all these sections will be ECF graded.
Pupils can only participate in one age group throughout the competition.
There will be medals for each competition and the team event. The top four players from each school counting towards the team results.
U11-U13 competitions
The U11/U12/U13 section is for players who are not experienced enough to play in the Championship section.
This tournament will be played over seven rounds across two days.
The time control will be 45 minutes per player.
Games in all these sections will be ECF graded.
U9 and U10 competitions
The U9 and U10 sections will have their own age tournament on day one and will then be divided up into A, B and C sections for day two, based on their day one performance.
On day one competitors will play four rounds (1 hour per round).
On day two competitors will play five rounds (1 hour per round).
Competitor details
Once you have booked, you will be asked to provide some details about your competitors before the event. In line with GDPR, only essential information is collected in order to be able to organise the sports event.Booking online

The national governing body for chess in England is the English Chess Federation.
All IAPS chess championships are conducted under the English Chess Federation rules.
